* YES we know... the iPad makes its striking debut on on April 3rd. It's sure to be a pure pleasure but ...... FIRST... It's my birthday Damn it! oh my gosh, where has the time gone... I cant believe that im going to be 35! With many great memories... its time to celebrate the great experiences had and kicking in the door to many more in the future. Smarbar has played home to quite a few birthday celebrations to date. The first was my 30th Birthday... with Crosstown Rebels - Damian Lazarus... others included a huge dj set with about 20 of my closest dj friends from Chicago, Abe Duque, Speedy J and last year Daniel Bell. Im happy to have the opportunity to come back to smartbar again this year and celebrate with dj favorites Bryan Zentz who really knows how to work up energy in a room and knows how to get a party goin... also on board is one of my favorite lady dj's in charge: Detroit favorite - Punisher plus introducing (if you dont know them already)
two gentlemen - very dedicated to music
Jason Dunlap and Matt Main who's music selections are sure to be striking and pleasing.
This is set up to be an intense night of music which means the dancefloor will be a sweaty mess.. wear your dancin shoes and save a little room for me.
-Hope that you can make it.

All About | ApSerps
For the first time ever, MUTEK - the premier North American festival of electronic music and digital creativity - is making a preview stop in Chicago. The MUTEK festival - celebrating it's 11th anniversary this year from June 2 to 6 in Montreal, Canada - has distinguished itself as an international rendezvous for original and avant-garde programming, with interests in both the experimental and the playful sides of digital creativity. Dedicated to the dissemination and development of digital creativity in sound, music, and audio-visual art, the organization's mandate is to provide a platform for the most original and visionary artists currently working in their fields, with the intent of providing an outlet of initiation and discovery for the audiences they seek to develop. As the Mutek festival experience is truly one of our favorites in the world, we're hoping to expand its awareness in Chicago. Perhaps convince the uninitiated to come along to the beautifully intriguing city of Montreal, Quebec for a couple musically enlightened and inspiring days at the beginning of June.
Akufen (From Montreal | Musique Risquée, Perlon, Mutek, Force Inc)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During the first half of this decade, Akufen (Marc Leclair) was one of the biggest names in contemporary house music. A native Montrealer who had spent the 80s and 90s engaged in the fervent experimental music community of this city, Marc began to gain notoriety during the first edition of the MUTEK Festival in 2000 with an utterly distinct, cut-up, micro-sampled approach to house music that recalled the work of Matthew Herbert as much as it did the abstraction of Leclair’s homegrown influence, the painter Jean-Paul Riopelle. As the founder of Musique Risquee - the festival's official record label - Marc's historical relationship with Mutek is undeniable. It was only fitting that Akufen return to the stage for the first time in five years at last years edition of MUTEK to present his first new material in just as long. A luminary and ambassador of the Montreal sound, it's also only fitting that an Akufen dj set be the headlining performance at the first ever Mutek-affiliated event in the city of Chicago.
Stephen Beaupré (From Montreal | Musique Risquée, Circus Company) LIVE
---------------------------------------------------------------
More than 10 years in the Montreal scene has converted Stephen Beaupré into an uncontestable dj/artist in the world of Canadian music. Attracting attention with his CRACKHAUS project, for which he collaborates with his friend and fellow artist Deadbeat, his particular approach to music manifests itself in decomposed and syncopated rhythms, which he develops with an incredible spontaneity. Equal measures of house and techno interplay, combined with elements of funk, guided by a strong artistic sensitivity. Diverse vocals and instrumentation, reworked with humor, intermingle with intense beats, delivering both a relaxed and agitated tone to his pieces. Having played along side such luminaries as Matthew Herbert, Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos, Pole, and Isolée, Stephen brings a taste of Mutek to Chicago that house city is sure to savor.
Leo 123 (From Chicago | Dark Party, Mush, Old Tacoma) LIVE
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having gained recent notoriety performing across the country as part of Dark Party with Eliot Lipp, URB Next 100 alumnus LEO 123's past productions, remixes and collaborations have been released by a number of prominent independent music labels in the scene such as Ghostly International, Hefty, Gold Standard Labs, and recently, Mush and Old Tacoma Records. His wide reaching sound has had him playing alongside the diverse likes of Prefuse 73, Metro Area, Gaslamp Killer, Nosaj Thing, Danger, Ellen Allien, Daedelus, Mux Mool, Tycho, John Roberts, Fax, and Four Tet among others. With future plans also including an EP for Old Tacoma Records, remixes for Eliot Lipp (Mush) and Kampion (Static Discos), as well as the anticipated DARK PARTY full-length debut titled "Light Years." (mixed by Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv), Leo's live electronic performance at Avant Mutek Chicago is very highly anticipated.
Hernan Sanchez (From Chicago | Meiotic)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
An established fixture of Chicago's thriving techno/house scene both on & off the decks, Hernan Sanchez possesses a proven talent for igniting dancefloors with his tasteful selection of current and classic productions. With an approach informed by the percussive musical pulse of his Latin background & the jacking raw beats of early Chicago house, Hernan demonstrates a focused attention to detail as he synthesizes engaging dialogues between tracks while maintaining a sensual & propulsive energy throughout the arc of his sets. A dark yet playful sensibility is a strong characteristic of Hernan's style, which puts forth a collection of sounds which can often range from Chicago-style boompty tracks to Berlin's skewed slow-burn abstract house to the deep & melodic output of Detroit's next wave. As a result, Hernan continues to serve as an in-demand DJ at numerous underground events as well as at such high-profile Chicago venues as Smartbar, Sonotheque, Lava, Vision, and Lumen. He has also been featured alongside a diverse range of leading talent whose names include Akufen, Bruno Pronsato, Derek Plaslaiko, Mike Shannon, and Dave Aju among others.
Jeff Pietro (From Chicago | fear of music NY)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
A long time Chicago scene vet, Jeff Pietro has been playing the underground circuit for many years. His eclectic tastes stems from an extensive catalog of music spanning decades - merging the old with the new to create a wide reaching, yet familiar sound. Having played alongside artists like Todd Sines, Convextion, Eliott Lipp, Kode 9, Distance, 2562, Kero, and Tim Exile, not to mention a slew of notable Chicago artists, Jeff's penchant for traveling the realms of deep techno and dubstep have made him a particularly sought after local performer. Currently working in the studio on a release for later this year, his Ableton performance will be the perfect segway as the preceding Ableton workshop transitions to the Avant Mutek Chicago Event.
